What is Cyanotype Fabric and How to Do Cyanotype on Fabric

Today’s people are more luxurious in using clothes. That is why; people try to find creativeness in it. For producing creative fabrics, at present, people take help from science. Making a unique photographic print on the fabric requires a cyanotype process.

Cyanotype fabric is the result of the cyanotype process. Cyanotypes are just a chemical reaction with ultraviolet light. In the past, cyanotype fabric is distinctive for its thick blue color. However, this is an antique photographic printing process developed in the middle of 1800. Now you can see cyanotype fabric around your side on the jeans, pants, shirt, t-shirt, blanket, etc.

What is Cyanotype Fabric?

Cyanotype is a photographic ultimate printing process actually for the fabrics. Primarily it was practiced on paper, and right now, it comes on fabric. It is created with the easy result of the scientific method. After adding cyanotype to the textile sector, we get beautiful designs and patterns on fabrics. Eye-catching and unique patterns on the different fabric types have become a trend. Having a huge demand for this fabric, it is producing greatly.

Cyanotype fabric is nothing but a different method of printing. It is a sequence of applying the color to fabric with some customizable designs and patterns. Getting the perfection of this process requires more attempt. Your use of techniques and chemicals will ensure the durability of the color (pattern) on the fabrics. Some specialists predict that this cyanotype process will replace the dyeing method one day. Cyanotype fabric is getting popular for its permanent printing and long-lasting capability.

Cyanotype fabric is a fabric that helps create white prints or matched color prints in the blue background. The characteristic of this fabric will be silk quality and cotton-based.

A question may arise in your mind: what textile companies supply cyanotype clothes? Many textile buying house in Bangladesh supply this type of clothes around the globe. Their cyanotype fabric is quality because this country is regarded as the world’s best-made garments supplier.

How to Do Cyanotype on Fabric:

Creating cyanotype on fabric is simple. It’s a fast process, and rather it indicates an interesting experiment. You can install your patterns on different kinds of fabrics.

Step- 1: Arranging Materials

To complete the action on the fabric, you should arrange all kinds of materials for the cyanotype process. All the materials are essential for making cyanotype fabric.

At first, you need cyanotype supplies. And it is a genuine cyanotype creation with the chemicals. Here you should have the necessary elements:

  • Bostick and Sullivan (Chemicals)
  • Two types of eye droppers
  • A spray bottle( small quality)
  • A thick brush for application
  • A porous fabric
  • Cardboard or hard surface

Step 2: Application

Here you have to open solution A and fill your eye-dropper from the bottle. You can put it on the plate whenever you want to use the brush to complete the process. Then you have to use another dropper for solution B (not to contaminate this solution). You have to use two droppers with the full brim in this process. Before filling them, you have to stir or shake them perfectly to mix well.

Now you have to spray this chemical on the place you desire to make the cyanotype design. Then brush this and coat the brush in vertical and horizontal directions.

Step 3: Exposure

Next, you have to dry the fabric in a yellowish-green color when you get your fabric. If you want to remove this fabric characteristic, you can dry it for a few hours. To justify it, you can touch a small part of the fabric (to feel it’s wet).

Arrange the materials if you want to put them into the fabric. For photographs, you need to use negative. It is because of changing them into black and white even by increasing the contrast. Now print this into transparency that is finished in the printing office. Here photograph is not effective as the subjects such as jewelry block the light completely where you can play your experiment on several times.

In this experiment, we represent an opaque necklace and take a negative photograph. Then it places on the fabric and covered by a box top or others that help to block the light until it is ready to expose. Now you can place a glass on the object and ensure that they are flat. However, it helps to create a much more crisper image. This process is significant for the photograph, but it is not special for the object.

Since you are prepared to expose, drive it outside and leave the box cover. Then it would help if you had potential sun rays for making shade. The exposure time is depended on the thickness of sunlight. To fix the exposure, you should move the chain slowly to work well. It needs about 7 minutes for a good experiment.

Step 4: Improvement and Fixing

Making cyanotype fabric is regarded as the necessary step. Cyanotype is a beautiful subject that is completed with water. This water ensures the photos look like it is what they ultimately should do. Then it works permanently.

Then it would help if you washed it clearly until looking clearer. When you find your photographs will not work well, you set right the experiment with exposure time again and ensure the photographs are pressed on the fabric.

Step 5Hanging for Dry

Then you have to dry your wet fabric on the hanger outdoors. Here in this step, if you find a yellow area, you have to wash it again and dry it.

Step 6Checking the Quality

Most people like cyanotype fabrics like as dark blue. We represent this experiment as the like. You have to use or add hydrogen peroxide to get rich in color for your expected area. They cover the entire area of the image and paint it ultimately. If you want to cover it fully, you should wash it again to dry. And since you paint on it, you need not wash or; hydrogen peroxide will leave you the design you’ve applied.

Final Thought:

Cyanotype fabric, a basic t-shirt, is popular around the world. They will find numerous processes for making this fabric. But most garment companies like to use this process.
