5 things to know about finding a Mentor

Having a mentor to guide you to get succeed in your goal can be a good option. But finding the right mentor in the workplace can be challenging sometimes. Even if you find the right mentor but building a good relationship with them can still be hard for you.

So, try to find a mentor who shares the same goal as you so that working together will offer you a great experience and better success results.

Here are five things to know about finding a mentor:

Engaged:

Even if you find the right mentor you will not get enough time to spend on a one-on-one conversation with your mentor. So, try to find a mentor who is happy to engage with you most of the time and ready to share their year-long experience to guide you in different ways to tackle your challenges. So, you need to identify if your mentor is actually trying to support you or he is just wasting the time.

Committed:

If your mentor is fully committed to strengthening the mentor-mentee relationship and is supporting you in every possible way to help you achieve your goal then you have found the right person. To be completely sure, try to ask your mentor about their earlier mentoring experience, have they ever had a mentor? What do they think about the mentor-mentee relationship?

This will help you to clear all your doubts.

Trustworthy:

Well, trust is the most important part of a mentor-mentee relationship and it helps both the mentor and the mentee to have a better experience working together. There will be some point in your life where you face challenges or difficulties and your mentor should support you at that time rather than leaving you alone to handle the situation.

Try to communicate with your mentor, share your issues and plans, and also ask them about their plans. This will help you to form a trustworthy relationship.

Values/priorities:

“The best way a mentor can prepare another leader is to expose him or her to other great people,” said John Calvin Maxwell, a New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Business Week best-selling author. John C. Maxwell is an American author, speaker, and pastor who has written many books, primarily focusing on leadership. He has written three books which have each sold more than one million copies: The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, Developing the Leader Within You, and The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader.

Although, it is a bit hard to find a mentor who shares the same value or priorities as you, but you can find one. If you are not sure about your values then try to write down something that is important for you. This list will help in matching the right mentor. Working with a mentor that shares the same value as you will allow you to form a strong connection.

Hobbies/interests:

Having a common ground of interest will help you to understand the other person more deeply. Well, there is less chance that a mentor will share all their interests but if you find one or two common interests will help you to enjoy a great conversation with your mentor and mentors will be more likely to support you every time.
