About the 2021 Amazon SDE Online Assessment
After the resume screening, Amazon will assign their Online Assessment to you.
However, the assessment depends on which SDE position you are applying for. The assessment versions we will focus on are Interns, New Grads and Experienced (also known as SDE 2).
Amazon’s SDE Assessments for Interns and New Grads
The assessments for the Interns and the New Grads are very similar. They both include three parts that every test taker must take.
Online Assessment Part 1: Code Debugging
This section has seven debugging questions that must be completed within 20 minutes. One must know what the functions do, how to fix the functions and how to resolve additional typecasting errors.
Online Assessment Part 2: Coding and Workstyles
This section contains a 70-minute coding assessment and a 15 minute Workstyles Assessment.
The coding assessment has two coding questions. To master this part, it is highly recommended to practice the Data Structures and Algorithms section in our online course. In that section, we have hundreds of coding problems on Arrays, Stacks, Queues, Linked Lists, Trees, Graphs and more.
The Workstyles Assessment has work style statements that much be chosen, to demonstrate one’s work attitude. Our course offers full Workstyles Assessment practice tests.
Online Assessment Part 3: Technical Problem Solving
This section includes a work simulation, called the “Day In The Life SDE Simulation”. The time limit is four hours and includes an interactive simulation of the daily working life of an SDE at Amazon.
There are scenario-based questions about project prioritization, dealing with team conflicts, handling underperforming colleagues, managing tight deadlines and more.
To succeed in this section, one must base their answers on Amazon’s Leadership Principles.
Amazon’s SDE 2 Assessment for Experienced Positions
This test is common for many senior SDE roles and it includes the following sections.
Amazon Coding Assessment
One is given 105 minutes to complete two coding questions and a Coding Approach Questionnaire. The Questionnaire requires explaining one’s preferred approach for solving coding questions. This section will be reviewed by real people and be brought up in your interview, so make sure to do well!
Amazon Workstyle Assessment
This 15-minute personality test assesses your preferred work style using multiple choice questions.
A five-minute survey to provide feedback to Amazon.
Helpful Tips for Passing the Assessments and Interviews
Get Used to Coding Under Pressure
The online coding assessments are timed. When practicing, use a timer to ensure you can meet the time limits on the actual assessment.
Try to analyze how much time it takes to finish each problem. Also examine how long it takes to read and understand each question.
Measuring how long each question takes helps to reduce panic on test day!
Think About the Logic Behind Every Solution
Memorizing answers will not be helpful. Try to understand the reasoning and patterns behind the problem solutions. This can help with solving other coding questions in the assessment.
Learn How to Articulate How You Arrived at Your Answers
Explaining your solutions and though processes are important, especially during the interview.
Practice discussing your coding out loud. This helps to avoid silences during coding questions that are brought up during the interview.
When discussing coding concepts, be specific and clear, and use the formal terminology.
Explain your coding using logical sequences, from start to finish of your process.
Study Amazon’s Leadership Principles in Detail
Amazon is very focused on its Leadership Principles. Their recruiters and interviewers expect you to answer using the principles. TO get hired, you must know them by heart and use them frequently, throughout the application process. Having at least two real life professional examples of each principle is best!
Practice Interviewing with a Webcam
As of 2020, all interviews are virtual. Experienced roles have a five-hour interview. New Grads and Interns have interviews of about one to three hours. On these interviews, there will be behavioral questions and coding solutions done on virtual whiteboards. Practice your interviewing so it is nice and smooth, without hiccups!
Do Not Worry Too Much on the Bar Raiser Interview
The Amazon Bar Raiser interview is hard. Its coding question will be difficult. Plus, the interviewer will drill into all the details on your behavioral question responses. Remember to not take the questions or interviewer personally. When practicing, always break down your answers into pieces and details.
